Mexican-American freed after 23 years

Alfonso Martin del Campo Dodd has been freed after 23 years.  He was convicted in 1992 for the murder of his sister and brother-in-law after being tortured for a confession.

One of the police officers that had gotten the confession stated that he had “placed a plastic bag over his [Alfonso’s] head and had beaten him”  a 4-1 ruling said “Mr Martin del Campo… should be freed ‘in light of the proof that torture was used to obtain his confession in the two crimes, without there being any incriminatory evidence'”.

Many people have protested the use of torture to gain information on the grounds of it being unethical and information obtained from torture is unreliable.  One can understand torture being an unreliable source of information as even innocent people will confess or answer questions to make the pain go away.
