Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino said in a recent interview that the U.S. was the real threat toward Latin America. This goes in direct contradiction to President Obama’s more recent comments on the situation. He declared Venezuela a security threat to both the United States, and to the rest of Latin America. Patino sees these developments as a replay of history in U.S. and Latin American relations. Specifically Patino fears these developments may be used to justify intervention in the months to come. Patino also concludes that oil may also be a major factor in U.S. interests in the area, going as far as to quote the invasion of Iraq and Libya. Meanwhile the Union of South American Nations has also criticized U.S. policy saying that it threatens sovereignty.
