According to Russian network Sputnik, Venezuela recently announced plans to increase the total amount of arms it imports from China.
This is in some ways not a big surprise–as Venezuela is already the largest arms importer in South America. Between 2010 and 2014, the country imported $349 million worth of arms from China and $1.96 billion (USD) worth of arms from Russia.
According to an article from the Business Insider, Russia intends to build influence in Central and South America in order to counteract US power. To this end, Russia has been sending “surface-to-air missile systems, anti-tank missiles, self-propelled artillery, and helicopters.”
Still a little Cold War bitter? I think so.
China’s been sending artillery pieces, transport aircraft and tanks, but her motivation seems more economic and less, uh, Soviet.
