The focus of the upcoming Summit of the Americas will not be Cuba as might have been expected towards the beginning of the year. Venezuela is becoming the major focus on the Latin American stage, and along with it, President Obama’s latest remarks on the situation. The President stated that Venezuela is now a security threat to the United States of America. His comments have since faced a backlash in the Latin American community. Thirty three members of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States have expressed their disapproval of Obama’s statements. They see it as threat to Venezuela, and a U.S. attempt to dictate the politics of the region. Once again, a complicated past in the relations between the U.S. and Latin America has led to problems in the past.
