Nicaragua is attempting to cash in on the special economic situation that Panama currently holds in Latin America. They are making plans and are attempting to move forward on building a canal. This is a ground breaking development considering all of the factors of the situation. Most of the funding for the canal would come from Nicaragua itself. Panama had an advantage in obtaining its canal because the U.S. was the primary funder. Of course, there are suspicions that the Chinese hold a stake in the canal. To this point the Chinese have denied any involvement in the affair. Aside from the biological and environmental impacts involved in the building, there is a great deal of speculation about whether or not a second canal is even needed in Central America.
