The horrific terrorist attack that occurred yesterday on a bustling New York City bike path killed 5 Argentine tourists. From Rosario, Argentina, Hernán Mendoza, Diego Angelini, Alejandro Pagnucco, Ariel Erlij and Hernán Ferruchi were among the eight victims of the attack. There were three others in their group, all who survived. They were in the city for their thirtieth high school reunion, and had been planning the trip for years.
The perpetrator of the attack, a legal citizen from Uzbekistan named Habibullaevic Saipov, drove his pick up trip through the crowded bike path near the World Trade Center. A note found near the truck proclaimed his allegiance to the Islamic State.
President Mauricio Macri tweeted his sorrows, stating that the victims were “model citizens” and calling on Argentina to stand together in the face of terrorism. Erlij was a successful owner of an iron and steel works company who was well-known and liked in the community. Two others, Ferruchi and Angelini, were architects in Rosario.
The attack sent shockwaves through Rosario, Argentina’s third largest city, as friends and family of the victims are mourning their sudden, incomprehensible loss.
